In the past year, I've become particularly aware of the damage plastic is having on our environment and ocean ecosystems, and I'm actively reducing my use of plastics - and encouraging others to do the same. It's really exciting when you find a company with values that align with your own, particularly when their products actually work and do what they are meant to. If you haven't already heard of Ethique, let me tell you how they are making a difference in our world. In 2012 Brianne West, began making natural beauty bars which are a great alternative to remove plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles that end up as waste (#giveupthebottle). Since then, she has developed over 40 products that are exported worldwide, meaning that there are over 500,000 less plastic bottles ending up in landfill.....! Wow! Why do we need to reduce our use and reliance on plastic products? Because 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean every year, due to wash off from landfill & improper disposal and 80 billion plastic bottles are disposed of around the world every year just from shampoo & conditioner alone. We have evidence that 90% of fish have ingested microplastics (think about plastic bio-accumulation in the fish we eat) and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. These stats are real and they are scary. They are enough to turn me away from using plastics. Brianne, a qualified scientist, is the founder and managing director of Ethique (which is French for ethical!) who make natural beauty bars with 100% naturally derived ingredients. This means that each beauty bar is free from parabens, petroleum by-products, palm oil (and its derivatives), synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde donors and other ingredients. This means when you shop Ethique, your skin, hair and body are glowing from products that are:
Just then you didn't think it could get much better - Ethique is certified climate neutral and is a certified BCorp business, recognised as New Zealand’s most sustainable business. Ethique also works directly with producers to ensure they are paid a fair price for their product, meaning they then look after their community and the environment. Oh, and they donate 2% of revenue (or 20% of profits - whichever is highest!) to support animal rescue and rehabilitation charities. Impressive, huh. They literally have beauty bars for everything:
They also have mini-sized sampler packs which have 5 beauty bars in a gift box - perfect to try out a few to find your perfect product! Or a great plastic-free alternative to give as a gift (I know I would be excited to get a plastic-free gift like this!). After first reading about Ethique (literally everything on the website), I was super excited about the company and the products they offered and after trying a range of their beauty bars, I can honestly say they've done an incredible job. I've tried a few beauty bars in my time, and would definitely recommend Ethique's bars. The reason I'm so supportive of Ethique is not only to promote their business and encourage you to try their products because their values align closely with my own - Ethique has been incredibly generous and donated some beauty bars to support me in my fundraising efforts for Homeward Bound...! I will be taking mine away with my to Antarctica at the end of this year because they are seriously amazing to travel with. I will try and get some photos of the products down there - Maybe the furthest (and coldest?!) adventure for an Ethique beauty bar? Stay tuned...! - Steph XO
